This is a one-month elective for fourth year medical students designed to provide the student with exposure to the Emergency Medicine specialty. The rotation is completed at AdventHeath East Orlando, a busy emergency department that serves a diverse population in the greater Orlando area. The student will function at the level of a sub-intern and will work closely with the attending physicians and residents in the Emergency Department. The student will see patients independently (unless critically ill) and will be primarily responsible for these patients while in the ED. Students will complete their history and exam, present the patient’s case, assist in developing and executing the plan of care for these patients, re-evaluate their patients, and help make decisions about disposition. Student will also complete procedures (simulated and/or in the clinical environment) during the rotation including intubation, central line placement, laceration repair, incision and drainage, lumbar puncture, chest tube placement, and other common ED procedures.
Shift Schedule
Students work approximately 12 eight hour shifts in the emergency department. This includes an Ultrasound shift/workshop and will be a combination of adult and pediatric shifts.
Didactics
During this clerkship students will also be exposed to the weekly resident conferences and will have a dedicated student lecture series. The rotation allows the student to participate in simulations, a procedural workshop and an Ultrasound workshop.
